Hello and welcome to AI for South Africa. My name is Maxine, and today we're going to be covering how to introduce AI to your kids. Let me ask you something. Has your kid ever asked your phone a question before you even finished typing it? Or watched a YouTube video that just kept going one after the other after the other, perfectly chosen for what they like and what they've been watching. Like somebody knew what they were watching and knew exactly what they wanted to see next. That's AI already in your house right now. We didn't sit down with our kids and say, right, today we're introducing you to artificial intelligence. It just happened quietly in the background while we were making supper or helping with homework and just trying to get through the day. And I think a lot of us, myself included, have been waiting for the right moment to have the AI conversation with our kids. What I've realized is the moment's already passed. The conversation is already happening. We're just in it. Now, this is where it gets interesting because there's a big debate happening right now about what we should do about that. So Sweden and Norway have recently made headlines around how they're blocking AI access for children under a certain age and giving heavy restrictions for older kids. And look, I get it, I understand the instinct. When something feels big and unfamiliar and you you don't know how your kids are using it or how you could use it safely and where it leads to, then it's better to just put up a wall. But here's what I keep coming back to, uh, and I want you to sit with us for a second, right? Imagine a kid who, let's say, is four years old, okay, gets introduced to cricket, like the game cricket. He falls in love with it. He's playing it every afternoon, he's drawing cricket bats in school books, his speeches are about cricket, his favorite euros are cricket players. He sometimes forgets to do his homework because he's out in the garden practicing his bowling. He's fully, completely obsessed with the game. And at some point, someone has to say to him, Hey, listen here, Johnny, you've got to do your homework first and then you can do cricket. But nobody bans cricket for all kids in the country because one kid is so obsessed with it. And I think that's exactly where we are with AI. The answer isn't just to shut the door, the answer is to teach them how to walk through it responsibly. And that's what I want to try and cover today. Let me start with something that stopped me in my tracks when I read it, right? Researchers have found that two-thirds of the world's children, that's 1.3 billion kids, don't have internet access at home. Okay, that's a lot. And for those who do, many of them are already using AI tools without any adults ever explaining it or giving supervision. That's not a global problem, that's a South African problem. We have kids in Soweto on a borrowed phone. We have kids in Stellenbosch on a brand new laptop. In both those cases, AI is already in the mix. The question is whether we're helping them understand it or whether we're leaving them to just figure it out. And here's what's happening when we're leaving them to figure it out. They found the laziest path. The copy-paste, hand it in, no thinking. And that's not AI's fault. That's not the company, the tech company's fault. That's just what happens when a powerful tool lands in someone's hands with no context of how to use it well. It's like giving a kid a calculator before even understanding maths. Sure, they'll get the right answers, but they won't know why. So the goal isn't to protect your kid from AI, the goal is to help them use it in a way that makes them smarter, more curious, more capable, not less. I want to give you three things today that I genuinely think can make the difference. Okay. One, banning doesn't prepare them, balance does. Here's a practical reality: GPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, these are not going anywhere. They're getting more capable, more embedded, and more present. By the time our kids are in the job market, AI fluency is gonna be as expected as how to write an email or send a WhatsApp. If you're banning it at home or pretending it doesn't exist, you're not protecting them, you're putting them on the back foot. What can we do to use it together first? Where the parent leads, the child watches, asks questions, participates on the side. The first interaction, when you're in the room, when you're a part of the conversation, sets the template for the rest of the time. I know a lot of parents who are already naturally doing this, they'll be like, Let's ask the GPT. They'll type the question that the kid wants, and that's perfect. You don't need a lesson plan. You can do this one while you're driving. One of our kids' friends in the class, their dad, made a really, really cool song about space using AI. And it was awesome. The kids loved it, they were obsessed. And something else that's worth knowing that both GPT and Gemini have learning modes in their apps. So if you set up a device with your kid that your kid can use, you can set it to learning mode, which then filters the content, it adjusts the language, it keeps it more interactive, it doesn't just give them the answers, which is really great. It's not a perfect safety net, but it's there, and I think it's definitely worth exploring too. Teach them the difference between using AI and being used by AI. This is the one I think about the most because the risk isn't AI itself, the risk is autopilot or doing nothing. A kid who uses AI well asks the questions, pushes back, uses it to think harder, not to avoid thinking at all. A kid who gets used by AI just feeds it the prompt and copy-pastes and put it into their homework. The difference is a habit, and and we can build that habit early. There's a concept called cognitive offloading, basically outsourcing your thinking to something else. And AI is extraordinary at making that tempting because it's fast, it's confident, it sounds convincing. And if a child never learns to question it, they stop developing that very skill AI should be helping them with in the first place. So the habit I want to share is a practical one. You can try it this week. Is what I call before, during, and after. Before you use AI, engage your own brain first. Every two minutes. What do I really know about this? What am I trying to figure out? Then during, use AI as a question ask, not an answer giver. Instead of saying, write my essay about water cycle, try and be like, ask me questions about the water cycle so I can think it through. Completely different outcome. The AI becomes the tutor, not the ghostwriter. Then after, close it and write down what you actually learned in your own words, make it yours. The first time you do this with your kid, it might feel slower than just getting the answer. But the second or third time something shifts. They start to enjoy the conversation with AI, and that's when it stops being a shortcut and starts being a tool. So let's go through those ones again. Okay, so the before is engage in your own brain first. What do I really know about this and what am I trying to figure out? Then the during, we use AI as a question asker, not an answer giver. So ask me questions about what I know about this topic so that I can think it through. Then after it's closing AI and writing down what I know about it in my own words and making it mine. Again, this stops AI being used as a shortcut and starts being a tool for your kids. So the third one is knowing what's real and what AI still can't do. This one's specifically important for teens and honestly for all of us sometimes because we forget. We live in a world now where photos can be fake and voice notes can be fake and videos can be fake, and it can be good enough to fool anybody. So one thing worth doing as a family, and we do this ourselves, is to look at AI-generated content together and talk about the clues. AI images often have strange hands, extra fingers, the backgrounds are blurry in odd ways. If you train your kids to notice these little things and give them the superpower to understand what most adults don't, they're gonna be ahead. And beyond that, just the habit of asking, how do I know this is real? Before sharing something, before believing in something or acting on something. That's a real life skill that stops chaos. AI just makes it more urgent now. Let's look at three real user cases across three ages, because what this looks like for a five-year-old versus what it looks like for an 11-year-old and a 16-year-old is very different. So younger kids age 47, it's the curious conversation. The age of this group is it's all about wonder. They're not ready for lessons on machine learning and stuff. Maybe you could ask them, you make an AI song and chat about it, see what they say. Is it a real person? Do you think it's a machine? How does it know what to say? Things like that. That's the whole lesson. It's simple, it's true, and it's just about planting the seed. About sometimes you need to question AI, and AI is a guesser, it's not a friend. There's an important distinction between it, you know. And if your little one loves making stuff like the songs and the drawings and the stories, this is also the age where the creative tools are just pure fun, making up characters, generating silly images and stuff. I've created a custom GPT which I will share with you guys that I use with my kids, and it asks you what age you are and what you want to do, and it's about creating a space where they can either play a game, create a colouring picture, or find something in the house and do science and explore. It's really helped me go through the process of sharing what the bots on my phone can help them with, but it's always about them starting the conversation, them guiding it, and AI just helping them get better ideas from it. It's not the complete answer. They got to put in the effort first, and that's what I try to achieve with that GPT. I'll share it with you, and you guys can use it. Then the next stage is the tweens, which is 10 to 13, and this is the before, during, and after habit that we need to start implementing. Say your child has a life science assignment due and they're going to want to use AI. Let them, but then walk them through the habit once together. Before, tell me what you already know about photosynthesis. Let them talk to you for a couple of minutes, get their brain working, ask them a couple of questions around it. Then open GPT or Gemini together and instead of saying explain photosynthesis, say to them, what kind of questions do you think we can ask that will help you understand what you know? You know, maybe it can be like, I'm a grade six student and I already know that plants use sunlight. Can you ask me some questions to help me understand the rest of the process and see what happens then? You know, and making sure that AI is the tutor and not the ghostwriter again. Your kid is still thinking, but it's thinking differently. They're pulling stuff from different places. And then the after you close the AI and you say, cool, now we've learned all of that. We've had a fun session with AI, let's write it down now. No copy-pasting or anything like that. It's their words, their understanding of it. And I promise you, the first time you do it, it'll really will feel slow. But it starts to bring that habit into place before they start to get to high school and university because that's when they rarely get to that. Give me the easy answer. The next stage is teenagers, so 14 to 18, and this is the show me moment, right? Teens have already been using AI heavily for school creative projects, they understand what's created with AI, TikTok, and all of that stuff. If your kids have social media, you can't really stop them. So let's ask them, create the conversations. Show me what you used AI for recently. And most teenagers will actually love the question because it puts them in a position that they know stuff. And while they're showing you, you could ask real questions like, did you check that that was accurate? Is it real? How do you know it's not real? Making them the person of knowledge. You're not interrogating them, you're thinking with them. That's the relationship where you and your teenager are figuring AI out together. If you can get your teenager to figure anything out with you or even talk to you, this is exactly the kind of trust that you want to create. And that's what matters. And then honestly, if your teenager is into music and into art and into video and AI are doing all these extraordinary things in this space right now, maybe go on that adventure with them together and see what you can create. Instead of worrying about what they're doing, guide the journey, get their interest on what it is, and just run with it. And then slowly but surely ask them the questions so they start to think about how they're using AI. Right. So the one thing I want you to do this week is pick a moment, a small moment where you can interact with your child and talk about AI as per the last three elements that are discussed with you. I will also drop it in the show notes so that you can get an understanding of what you could possibly do and as well as the before, during, and after habit to start creating with your kids. You don't have to have all the answers. Remember, you the sooner you show your kids that and that you're learning together, the more open they'll be with you. The goal is to open the door and stay curious with it and stay curious together. If you've got younger kids, do it over supper or over whatever they're doing. If you have teens, maybe five minutes on the couch or driving home. Just spark the conversation and have it. Share your thoughts and conversations in our comments. But I think the worst thing that we can do is stay out of the conversation and hope that it sorts itself out. Banning cricket doesn't make kids better at math, and banning AI is not going to prepare our kids for the world that they're actually going to live in. So our kids are curious, brave, and they adapt a lot faster than any of us. I think they just need us in the room while we're going through this process of learning what the hell AI is.
